Interesting how, although celebrating the same Christian event, customs vary. I suppose over time there is an intermingling of pre-christian customs and traditions unique to particular countries/areas/cultures with the Christian ones.

When I was young our tree and decorations just HAD to be down by the 6th Jan and I keep this tradition going. This year they are down but still waiting to be stored away.

I had to take down my Christmas tree on the 4th already - it was way to dry to be kept any longer... (I forgot to give it water...), but I usually keep them up till February... for precisely the reasons you mention, Kathy.

I had no idea of the Romanian customs surrounding Epiphany. Thanks, Mihaela, for posting this. It's kind of sad when the whole celebration of Christmas comes to an end -- even in North America. I love to keep all the decorations up as long as possible - especially the lights, which bring joy to dark winter days!
